THE DOMINATION

1991 – 2000

The sheer domination of the Razorback track team during the period from 1990 to 2000 is almost beyond comprehension. Of 30 NCAA team titles available during that ten year time frame, the Hogs won 24 and were runners up four times. They won nine indoor titles, eight outdoors and seven cross country. Arkansas who joined the South Eastern Conference in 1992, won 29 of 30 conference titles in that same period. Notably, the Hogs registered 4 consecutive NCAA Triple Crowns and would earned two more had the cross country teams not finished in the runners up spot in 1996 and 1997.  Domination indeed.

15 SEC Individual Titles
(Siamusiye 4, Doakes 2, Rock 2, Hood 2, Romaine 2, Hemingway 1, Thompson 1, DMR 1)

By the Razorbacks exalted standards this cross country season was a disappointment. They lost the team race at the OSU jamboree and won the SEC conference by a mere 4 points over Tennessee. Jason Bunston won the individual title as Ryan Wilson and Graham hood finished top 5. The NCAA championships were held at the Prairie Grove Battlefield Park in NWA and expectations were immense. For once the Hogs failed to live up to expectations and finished 10th. Their top finisher individually, Bunston finished 10th. The next best was Michael Morin in 54th.

Indoor track and field started off strong for the Arkansas Razorbacks. At the Arkansas Invitational, Ray Doakes and Matt Hemingway tied for the high jump title with a jump of 7 feet 4.25 inches. Jerome Romaine won the triple jump with a jump of 54 feet 1.75 inches, and Graham Hood ran a 3,000-meter race in 7 minutes and 56.57 seconds. The Razorbacks clinched their 23rd consecutive conference indoor title, thanks to seven individual victories. Romaine won the triple jump, Brandon Rick won the 800 meters, Hood won the mile and the 3,000 meters, Godfrey Siamusiye won the 5,000 meters, Doakes and Hemingway won the high jump, and the Distance Medley Relay team won the relay. Hood was the top scorer for the team, thanks to his anchor leg in the DMR. At the NCAA meet, the Razorbacks secured their 12th consecutive team title, with more points than their closest competitors, Tennessee and George Mason. Only four Razorbacks failed to make the final. Bunston fell in the 3,000-meter race but got up and won, becoming the only individual winner. Doakes and Hemingway also finished second in the 3,000 meters, Hood finished second in the mile, Derrick Thompson finished second in the 200 meters, and Siamusiye finished second in the 5,000 meters.

The momentum created indoors continued outside. Ray Doakes set a Penn Relays record of 7’5.75” in the high jump and Jerome Romaine did likewise with 56’ 2’’ in the triple. Godfrey Siamusiye won the 10,000m in 28:45.09. Siamusiye was in exceptional form at the SEC meet, winning 3 events, 3,000m Steeplechase, 5,000m and 10,000m. The Hogs suffered two losses during the regular season. They were beaten into second in the OSU Jamboree by hosts OSU. They finished 4th in their home meet, the Chile Pepper XC Festival. Godfrey Siamusiye was a bright spot. Wining both races. The Hogs recovered from the poor start to win both the SEC and NCAA meets. Siamusiye won the SEC and NCAA individual titles. The Hogs won their 8th National Cross Country title and 25th overall title. Ryan Wilson was second man in both championships finishing. 5th at nationals and 4th in the conference. Also scoring were Phillip Price, Sean Kaley and Matt Kerr.

The indoor season marked the end of the NCAA indoor streak at 12, losing the NCAA title to George Mason by 10 points and the end of the SEC indoor streak at 14, losing to Tennessee by 9 points. There were some sterling performances however. Ryan Wilson won the high point scorer award for his victories in the SEC mile and 3,000m. The other individual winner was Godfrey Siamusiye in the 5,000m. Wilson won the 3,000m at the national meet and Siamusiye was second in the 5,000. Robert Howard won the triple jump.

The Hogs rebounded outdoors. At the SEC, they pushed Tennessee back to the runners up position. Godfrey Siamusiye did most of the heavy lifting; he scored 30 points, winning all three distance events for the second consecutive year. Jason Bunston was runner up in the 1,500m and runner up to Siamusiye in two events, 5,000m and 10,000m. Seneca Lassiter won the 800m. Wilson won the 1,500m. Harry Jones won the 110m Hurdles. Siamusiye led Bunston to 1st and 2nd place finishes in the 10,000m and 2nd and 3rd places in the 5,000m, yielding 32 points from the 2 events. Howard won the Triple Jump with a mark of 56’1.75” and was 4th in the long jump. Hemingway was second in the high jump with a height of 7’5”. This was the 5th consecutive NCAA outdoor Team Title for the Hogs.

(Howard 4)
3 SEC Team Titles
13 SEC Individual Titles
(Howard 4, Wilson 2, Kaley 2, Lassiter 1, Kerr 1, White 1, Sidney 1, DMR 1)

Cross country was all about Godfrey. Siamusiye. He won the conference title in Oxford, Mississippi by 45 seconds. Ryan Wilson was second, Sean Kaley was third, Mike Power was fourth and Matt Kerr was the final scorer in fifth. A perfect score of 15 points. Alabama was runner up with 64 points. Showing their depth the three others on the team (Seneca Lassiter, Phil Price and Todd Tressler) finished eight, eleventh and twelfth. After dominating the conference, meet expectations were high at the nationals. The Razorbacks hoped to win and set up another run at a Triple Crown. Siamusiye delivered a master class in running over the country in taking a second consecutive individual crown. Three Hogs made the top 10. Kaley was seventh and Wilson was eight. The other scorers were Lassiter in 28th and Price in 41st. Not what was expected but not bad. Unfortunately, Arkansas was beaten by Stanford 46 to 74.

At the conference indoor championships in Gainesville, Florida, the Hogs beat Florida 147.5 points to 101. They had five individual champions. plus the Distance Medley Relay team. Robert Howard doubled in the horizontal jumps and Kaley and Wilson won the 5,000m and 3,000m respectively. The Razorbacks won yet another NCAA team title in Indianapolis. Howard won both jumps again. He was assisted by James Ballard with a sixth in the long jump and a third in the high jump and in the triple jump by his namesake Antoine Howard who was sixth. Kaley was second in the 5,000m and Ryan Wilson was second in the 3,000m. Also, Lassiter was second in the mile and anchored DMR into sixth place.

It was more of the same outdoors the Razorbacks won the conference title in Auburn, Alabama, by a score of 188 points to 115 for Tennessee. The outdoor nationals in Bloomington, Indiana produced another national championship. The Hogs won the team title over the Texas longhorns, 55 points to 42.5 points.

In the conference meet Robert Howard won the long jump and triple jump. Kaley won the 5,000m. Kerr won the Steeplechase. Shannon Sydney won the intermediate. hurdles and Kevin White won the shorter version. Wilson won the 10,000m.

1998

2 NCAA Team Titles
4 NCAA Individual Titles
(Howard 4)
3 SEC Team Titles
13 SEC Individual Titles
(Howard 3, Wilson 2, Kaley 2, Lassiter 3, Kerr 2, Power 1, Evans 2, DMR 1)

In the SEC cross country. Championship, Ryan Wilson won handily as the Hogs filled positions 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7 and scored 19 points. The Hogs were prepared for nationals but, in one of the closest finishes ever, Stanford Squeaked past the Hogs for a three point team victory. Ryan Wilson was 5th, Sean Kaley 9th, Mike Power 12th, Phillip Price 15th and Murray link was 37th. Imagine scoring 58 points and not winning

As expected Robert Howard played a major role in the Hogs in both NCAA team titles but it was Arkansas’s depth that allowed the razorbacks to take home the trophy at the indoor nationals. Howard won both the broad jumps at the meet, the triple jump with a seriously injured achilles. Kenny Evans became the first Razorback freshman to win a field event national title in his first try with a jump of 7’5”. Teammate Kevin Dotson was runner up to Evans. There were other impressive performances, Sean Kaley was second in the 5,000m, Seneca Lassiter was third in the mile and Matt Kerr was third in the 3,000m.

In the SEC indoor championships, the Razorbacks set a meet record with 181 points, second place LSU had a mere 77. Matt Kerr was the meet high points scorer with a victory in the mile, second in the 3,000 and a leg on the wining DMR. He led the Hogs to a 1st, 2nd, and 4th finish in the mile. Sean Kaley led Adam Dailey, Andrew Begley and Alan Dunleavy to a 1,2,3 and 5 placing in the 5,000m. Lassiter won the 800m and ran a leg on the DMR. Gordon Sasser was a stunning 2nd in the pole vault. Robert Howard won the triple jump but, oddly, finished 2nd in the long jump

Outdoor was more Hog domination. At the SEC, both Howard and Lassiter were double champions, the two broad jumps for Howard and the 800m and 1,500m for Lassiter. As expected the Hogs got excellent results from the distance crew. Power, Ryan Travis and Kerr went 2, 4 and 5 behind Lassiter in the 1,500m. Power and Kerr doubled with wins in the 5,000m and steeplechase. Sean Kaley won the 10,000 and was runner up in the 5,000. Evans was on top in the high ump with 7’4.5”. D’Marcus scored in both hurdles, highlighted by the silver medal position in the 400. The Hogs scored 183 points to 135.5 for LSU.

It took seven years from the first title in 1985 and in Buffalo, NY, the Razorbacks won their seventh straight title. As usual, Howard played a massive role. He became the first athlete to repeat in the long and triple jumps since our own Mike Conley. A decade earlier. Lassiter edged a victory in the 1,500m and Kerr led from the gun to the win in the Steeplechase. Evans finished 4th in the high jump, Power was third in the 5,000m. Trevor Rush was 6th in the 200m. The Hogs defeated Stanford 58.5 points to 51 to compensate for the even narrower loss to the cardinal in cross country nationals.

1999

3 NCAA Team Titles
2 NCAA Individual Titles
(Lister 2)
3 SEC Team Titles
10 SEC Individual Titles
(Lassiter 3, Dailey 1, Kaley 1, Lister 1, Kerr 1, Power 1, Evans 1, DMR 1)

The Hogs won their 25th conference cross country championship. All consecutive victories. A quarter century of excellence beginning in 1974. The Hogs scored an almost perfect 17 points and had a 42 point margin over Tennessee. Michael Power was the individual champion. At the NCAA, the Razorbacks were not the favorites, that tag belonged to the two time defending title holder, Stanford. To make the task even more difficult, team leader and conference champion, Power, experienced an asthma attack in the early stages and had to drop out. The others stepped up and rallied. Depth and determination spurred the Hogs to victory over the cardinal by 17 points. Sean Kaley led the Razorbacks in 5th, followed by a splendid 16th from Andrew Begley. Matt Kerr finished in 19th, Seneca Lassiter in 22nd and Adam Dailey in 49th.

At the SEC indoor championship, the Hogs won easily over South Carolina, scoring 152 points to the Gamecocks 81. As usual the Hogs overwhelmed the field in the middle distance events, scoring 33 points in the mile, 28 in the 3,000m, 18 in the 800 and 16 in the 5,000m. Power, Ryan Travis, Murray Link and Sharif Karie were 1st through 4th in the mile. Power, Kerr and Dailey went 1, 2 and 3 in the 3,000m. Kaley and Begley went 1 and 3 in the 5,000m. Lassiter won the 800m, Kenny Evans won the high jump. Melvin lister was 2nd and 3rd in the triple Jump and long jump respectively and Marcus Clavelle was 3rd in the Shot put. At the NCAA, the stiffest competition was expected to come from Stanford but the Hogs simply had too much depth. Arkansas scored 65 pounds while crowning one individual champion, Stanford was a distant second with 42.5 seconds. The Hogs only champion was Melvin Lister in the triple jump. Much was expected also of Seneca Laster, Michael Power, Sean Kaley and Kenny Evans. They performed admirably, Power was second in the 3,000m, Kaley 3rd in the 5,000m, Lassiter 3rd in the mile and Evans 2nd in the high jump. Marcus Clavelle was fifth in the shot put. The distance medley relay was also third.

Inspired by one of the greatest final day ever efforts in its incredible track history, Arkansas overcame a resilient Stanford and won it’s eighth consecutive NCAA outdoor title with a sterling last day. The Hogs scored 32 of their 59 points on the last day and outscored Stanford by 7 points. The Hogs won only two events Melvin Lister won the long jump, but suffered and an ankle injury and finished fifth in the triple jump. Matt Kerr won the Steeplechase for the second straight. Lassiter was second in the 1,500m. Kenny Evans was the defending high jump Champion, his 3rd place points on this ocassion were a boost. Marcus Clavelle was ranked 17th in the country before the meet but finished 5th. SharifK Karie had an important 5th in the 1,500m. Sam Glover was fifth in the hurdles. At the SEC s the Hogs were again the victors, their 12th conference outdoor title in succession. Champions included Lassiter in the 800 m and 1,500m, Adam Daley in the 10,000m and Kerr in the Steeplechase. Melvin Lister won the triple jump.

2000

2 NCAA Team Titles
3 NCAA Individual Titles
(Lister 3)
3 SEC Team Titles
12 SEC
(Karanu 3, Clavelle, 2, Lister 2, Begley 1, Daley 1, Evans 1, DMR 1, 4 X 400 Relay)

After finishing second at the 1998 NCAA championship, the Razorbacks were determined to return home with the title. Arkansas never would have believed the title would come so easily. It figured to be another shootout with Stanford, but the Hogs ran away with the victory. They set an NCAA record in the process. With three Razorbacks finishing in the top 10, the squad won by 127 points, the widest margin victory in an NCAA Championships, eclipsing the record of the 1993 Hogs who won by 122 points. The Hogs scored 58 points compared to runner up Wisconsin with 18. Mike Power led the Hogs with a 2nd place finish, Andrew Begley was 7th, James Karanu was 10th, Murray Link 24th, and Adam Daley 39th.

Indoors the Hogs won their 35th national championship by scoring 46.5 points of their 69.5 points in the field events. They came into the championship after scoring 168 points in the SEC indoors. 14 Razorbacks qualified in 16 events at nationals. During the first day of competition, they tallied 39.5 points 11.5 lead over Florida. Marcus Clavelle scored 6 points with third in the shot putt, Melvin Lister won the long jump with 26‘8.5“ on day one and Kenny Evans was second in the high jump with the personal best of 7‘7“. The DMR finished third. Ryan Travis and Murray Link finished 4th and 7th in the mile. The triple jump and then 3,000 m remained. The Hogs had 4 point lead over Stanford heading into the 3,000m, James, Karanu and Sharif Karie against four Stanford athletes. Karie set a personal best finished third and Karanu, who had run on the DMR finished fifth keep the Hogs in first place. Lister’s second individual title in the triple jump sealed the 35th National title.

The Hogs qualified 18 athletes for the NCAA championships outdoors in Durham North Carolina. After a disappointing first day the Hogs were in sixth place having suffered multiple minor setbacks. Daniel Lincoln was tripped in the Steeplechase qualifying round. The 4 x 100 relay team finished sixth. Lister was a surprising fourth in the long jump. His 6 points were the only points of the day. In the second day of competition, setbacks continued. Adam Daley was tripped with five laps to go in the 10,000 and almost fell. Clavelle failed to qualify for the finals in the shot putt. The Razorbacks began to improve slightly and qualified 6 individual athletes for day two, The biggest thrill of the night was the 4 x 400 meter relay breaking their previous collegiate best time of the year with 3:02.02 and finishing 2nd. When D’Marcus brown finished fifth in the 110 m yards hurdles, the Stanford lead had been cut to a mere six points. It would all come down to the 5,000m. The Hogs were represented by two athletes. Karie had just competed in the 1,500m and was exhausted. Link ran an admirable 3rd but the Stafford crew scored 18 points to seal the victory and deny the Hogs an NCAA Triple Crown.
